The Home Education Tracker

Ad | A few months ago, I was approached by the wonderful Claire, the designer and creator of the Home Education Tracker. She asked if I would be interested in exploring the platform and writing a review.

We've been homeschooling for just over three years, so I suppose you could call me a seasoned pro—just kidding! Most days, I feel like I’m completely winging it, and maybe that’s how it will always be. Our days are filled with bowls of porridge and colouring, digging worms out of the mud, navigating curriculums (and sometimes ditching them), unused sandpaper letters, and tiny hands clutching precious trinkets. There are curious questions from strangers and endless discoveries—not just about the patterns and rhythms of my children, but about myself as well.

It’s been an incredible journey so far. We've built beautiful connections and become part of communities I once could only dream of.

But, aside from my phone's maxed-out photo storage (with at least 400 burst shots courtesy of my 4-year-old), what do I have to show for our time? What do I have to remember, to mark, or even to look back on and celebrate our moments? How do I track the wins and losses? The first loaf of bread Heppy baked, the 10 books she completed for her reading challenge, or her Level 1 gymnastics certificate—all captured in photos buried somewhere in the abyss of my camera roll.

I often thought about keeping a journal, but the idea felt overwhelming amidst the endless to-do list. Then came the panic—should I be keeping a record? What if the local authorities ask? Do I even need to formally declare that I’m homeschooling?

In the middle of all this pondering, Claire reached out. The idea of having something to effortlessly track our progress, document our unique journey, mark milestones, celebrate achievements, and even share these moments with others felt incredibly special.

Join me as I dive into how the Home Education Tracker works.

Experience

I’ve been using the Home Education Tracker for a few months now, so I’ve had the chance to really have explore and test it out. First, it's important to note that this is not an official app; however, it is very well-optimized for mobile use. It has a user-friendly design that resembles an app when accessed from a phone. I’ve found it convenient to bookmark the site, which allows me to use it on the go whenever I have a moment to upload information and when we’re engaged in an activity.

Initially, it took me a little time to familiarize myself with the layout but the more I added entries the more things made sense. There is a FAQ section on the website too that helped with navigation. It’s been so useful to add on the go and while we are still very much building our homeschool days with Heppy being so young, I loved being able to see an overview of our week, what we’d got up and be able to reflect this to the kids and others too!

Features and Functionality

The Home Education Tracker feels key for serving as 1. A memory-making tool and 2. Easing report writing through tracking/metrics

  1. As a Memory-Making Tool

We are big on celebration in our household so being able to look back at what we’ve achieved and recognise the areas where we have grown is such a gift. The tracker makes this process incredibly easy. I appreciate consolidating everything we've covered into one place, rather than juggling multiple apps for notes, photos, and other information. I love the idea of easily sharing our journey with friends and family using the tracker. It’s given me a huge sense of achievement to look back at all we’ve learned. Our days often feel unstructured, and it’s only natural to wonder, Are we doing this right? Are my kids learning anything at all? But seeing everything in one place is incredibly rewarding.

2. For Authorities and Report Writing

The platform makes it easy to access stored entries and photos by date, allowing you to track milestones and gather the necessary metrics for report writing. The Admin tab lets you add the subjects and topics you’re studying, while the Timeline tab allows you to log entries for tasks, milestones, classes, or visits. Each entry can be linked to the specific subjects and topics you’ve set up in the Admin tab.

For example, this month we’re focusing on fossils. I might log an entry for a day spent creating fossils or exploring them under a microscope. When adding an entry, I can include a photo and any other relevant details, and link the task to a subject (e.g., “Pawprint Badges”) and a topic (e.g., “Archaeology and Fossils”). Here’s an example of an entry I logged for time spent at a friend’s house, where we looked at maps during our regular geography session.

The Stats tab provides overviews for specific time frames, showing data like the number of projects and subjects covered, as well as visits and milestones completed. The tracker records splits between different projects and subjects, provides breakdowns by subject and project, and offers month-by-month overviews and summaries of all logged data, along with other helpful metrics.

The platform really shines as you accumulate more data. It takes time to build, but it’s absolutely worth the effort.

unique features

I am fairly new to the homeschooling game as Heppy is only 6 but I’m yet to be offered or see something that serves a purpose similar to what the home education tracker does. That in itself is unique enough for me. I believe new areas of the tracker will be developed over time which is exciting and I really think there is so much scope for where the platform could go!

I also like the ability to turn on or off time tracking in settings meaning you can clock up the hours you’ve spent on particular tasks and also clock your hours outside too!

Pricing and Value for Money

Pricing is £25.00 per year or £2.50 per month, per child. In my opinion, this is a worthwhile investment. I haven’t come across anything else like it, and I love the idea of having everything consolidated on one platform rather than scattered across multiple apps, notes, and photos.

SUMMARY

I’ve absolutely loved test-driving this platform and genuinely feel it’s an essential part of our homeschooling routine—especially given the lack of similar options available. It’s been incredibly helpful for gaining insights into our homeschooling rhythms and identifying areas where I’d like to focus more time, thanks to the metrics provided. Because Heppy is still fairly young our approach with homeschooling so far has been pretty hands-off off but as she gets older and we cover more subjects etc. I can see an even greater need for a platform like this!

I’m particularly excited about the platform’s potential as it evolves into an app and the new features that could come with it. Whether it’s tracking more aspects of a child’s journey, personalising the platform, connecting with other users, or downloading reports when needed, there’s so much room for growth.

Having a tool to organize our homeschooling life and showcase the hard work we’ve put in is so encouraging, it’s such a gift to look back and reflect on these moments for years to come!
